Lesson 3: The Hollywood Big 6

Major Film Studios

        A major film studio is a film producer and distribution company that releases a substantial number of films annually. 
        The ‘Big 6’  Hollywood studios are:
§  20th Century Fox
§  Warner Bros.
§  Paramount
§  Columbia
§  Universal
§  Walt Disney Studio.

Roughly 9/10 films in the UK are seen as a result of these distributers.

Tasks:
 In pairs, research one film studio and present on PowerPoint.
 Your presentation should include information on:
  • the studio's history
  • their subsidiary companies and evaluate how their importance to the studio  
  • detailed research on  the studio's greatest successes i.e. films that have broken records, franchises, breakthroughs in technology etc

Lesson 2

Task 1  Write up your survey conclusions as a Blog post on your Blog.

What conclusions can you draw about the group’s choice of films? For e.g. why so many American films/ a particular genre or choice of viewing?
What are the Pros and Cons of watching films at the cinema/ DVD/ download/ TV.
What are the different methods of Marketing? Which do you think is the most effective and why.


Task 2: Important Glossary

Production – the concept of the film is developed from idea, to script, to filming to editing.

Marketing – publicity for the film in all countries of release to create interest/hype in the lead up to theatrical release.

Distribution – supplying the product/film to cinemas in hardware/software

Exhibition – the showing of the film to audiences

Lesson 1: Intro and class survey

The focus for Audiences and Institutions:

Discuss the processes of production, distribution, marketing and exchange as they relate to contemporary media institutions (the film industry), as well as the nature of audience consumption and the relationships between audiences and institutions.

In addition, candidates should be familiar with:
• The issues raised by media ownership;

• The importance of cross media convergence and synergy in production, distribution and marketing;

• Technologies that have been introduced in recent years at the levels of production, distribution, marketing and exchange;

• The significance of proliferation in hardware and content for institutions and audiences;

• The importance of technological convergence for institutions and audiences;

• The issues raised in the targeting of national and local audiences (specifically, British) by international or global institutions;

• The ways in which your own experiences of media consumption illustrate wider patterns and trends of audience behaviour.

This unit should be approached through contemporary examples in the form of case studies .
